Gift Acceptance Policy
Effective Date: 6/8/2024
Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to define the types of gifts that Forj, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting teens in foster care as they transition to adulthood, will accept and to provide guidelines for evaluating and processing contributions to ensure they align with Forj’s mission, values, and legal standards.
1. Gift Acceptance Principles
Forj relies on the generosity of donors to fund programs and services for teens in foster care. We are committed to working with donors to find meaningful ways to support our mission. All accepted gifts must:
- Align with Forj’s mission and purpose.
- Conform to applicable federal, state, and local laws.
- Avoid placing undue financial or administrative burdens on Forj.
- Allow Forj to maintain its independence, integrity, and core values.
2. Types of Acceptable Gifts
Forj will accept the following types of gifts, subject to the considerations and restrictions outlined below:
- Cash Donations: Cash contributions via check, credit card, or online payment.
- Securities: Publicly traded securities, such as stocks, bonds, and mutual funds.
- Bequests and Estate Gifts: Gifts made through a donor’s will or living trust.
- Real Estate: Real estate gifts may be accepted with prior board approval and subject to a property evaluation.
- In-Kind Gifts: Non-cash gifts of tangible personal property that are useful to Forj’s mission, subject to staff and advisory council review.
- Planned Gifts: Life insurance policies, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, and similar arrangements.
3. Gift Restrictions
Forj may decline any gift that does not support its mission or could compromise its values or public image. Restricted gifts, designated for specific programs or uses, must be reviewed by the executive team before acceptance to ensure they align with Forj’s priorities and financial capabilities.
4. Gift Review and Approval Process
- Council Approval: The Forj Advisory Council or its authorized committees will review and approve gifts of real estate, restricted gifts, planned gifts, and any gifts with conditions that may affect Forj’s policies, finances, or operations.
- Gift Agreements: For substantial or restricted gifts, Forj may require a gift agreement outlining the purpose, terms, and conditions to ensure mutual understanding and accountability.
5. Declining Gifts
Forj reserves the right to respectfully decline any gift that:
- Conflicts with Forj’s mission or values.
- Would impose undue administrative, financial, or operational burdens.
- Contains restrictions or conditions that Forj cannot fulfill.
- Could potentially damage Forj’s reputation or independence.
6. Recognition of Gifts
Forj values and recognizes its donors in ways that respect their privacy and preferences. All donor recognition will align with our policies and respect any requests for anonymity.
7. Donor Confidentiality
Forj is committed to safeguarding the privacy and confidentiality of its donors. Information about donations and donor information will not be shared outside the organization without the donor’s express consent, except as required by law.
8. Policy Review
This Gift Acceptance Policy is subject to periodic review by Forj’s Advisory Council to ensure it remains aligned with Forj’s mission and compliant with relevant laws and best practices.
